Obama Tells Big Tobacco - The FDA Is Your Mama!

Hi Jim,

Thanks for passing along the title of the editorial (Inflicting Punishment on Big Tobacco) which I took the liberty to read.

The article I read was written by Steve Chapman. He has quite a different take on the bill and in my opinion, does not see "the forest for the trees". It is his perception that the bill is meant to "confuse us rather than enlighten us". The paragraph below illustrates his distorted perception.......

One of the main purposes of the new law is to reduce the number of smokers in the name of improving "public health.” This is a skillful use of language to confuse rather than enlighten.
An individual decision to take up cigarettes is a private event, not a public one, and its health effects are almost entirely confined to the individual making the choice. Swine flu warrants government intervention because it is transmitted to people without their consent. Not so with tobacco addiction.

I beg to differ - the detrimental health effects of individuals smoking does eventually burden the population at large.

I'm not sure if you were referring to the same article, but as you said, this topic should make for some interesting discussion!

Well, I was going to paraphrase some of the editorial that I read this morning, but I just have too many job requests to complete today to do so.   Soooo, if you want to read it, and I think that everyone should, just Google the title of the editorial, "Inflicting Punishment on Big Tobacco".

I'm sure that we are all for the new bill that was signed into law, but it is interesting to read what the government has done to get this bill passed.  Should make for some interesting discussion!

I'm back after it now...  have a great smoke-free day everyone!

This is a very interesting topic.  Good for Obama, who joins us in our battle of the nicodemon.  Good luck- there's lots of money and power in the tobacco industry, and I imagine they're not too happy right now...

I read about our President signing the bill another editorial about this new legislation this morning.  I'm going to bring the article back to work this afternoon and highlight the authors thoughts, some of which were expressed in the editorial I wrote about in the Social Smoking thread last week.

We are in interesting times concerning the tobacco world...
